Dr. Jean-Paul Toutain, Ph.D., Principal Research Geochemist, is formerly the Directeur Observatoire Volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise on Réunion Is., France, in the Indian Ocean. Jean-Paul is currently a researcher in geochemistry at the Université de Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, France and is also attached, as a scientist, with the Observatoire Midi-Pyrenees. Jean-Paul provides INTLVRC with several aspects of volcanology and is our main resource for Health Risk Assessments concerning volcanoes. Jean-Paul recently made a significant contribution to INTLVRC's analysis of volcano Guagua Pichincha in Ecuador. In 2004, Dr. Jean-Paul was appointed in charge of the French-Indonesian Co-operation Programme in Volcanology and continues to serve in that capacity as well.

Jean-Paul provides studies in the behaviour of trace elements in the gas phase (aerosols, sublimates, etc.) as well as the chemistry of thermal waters associated with volcanic and seismic activities. Lastly, he provides instrumental geochemical monitoring (He, Rn, CO2) geochemical and volcanic gas analysis, as necessary for INTLVRC. Jean-Paul has already participated in previous INTLVRC expeditions to Réunion Is. & Indonesia, investigated the gas chemistry of volcanoes Mt. Etna, Stromboli Vulcano, Merapi & Taal. Most recently, expeditions to El Misti, Uruputuncu & Ubinas volcanoes and hydrothermal fields in Peru and Chile. Jean-Paul has written several papers and developed three posters with respect to volcanic geochemistry. Dr. Jean-Paul is a extremely talented scientist and an extremely valuable member of our staff. Jean-Paul is also a member of the International Association of Volcanology & Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI). Jean-Paul lives with his wife, Caroline, and their two children in Toulouse, France. He has been with INTLVRC since 1999.
